Manatee County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher MacKenzie wasn’t legally drunk when he showed up for a DUI training seminar but his breathalyzer result was high enough to force him to resign. On February 10 the deputy showed up for DUI training. As part of the training he took a breathalyzer test at 10:30 a.m. and his blood alcohol showed up as .025.
MacKenzie was well below the legal limit for impairment in Florida but the DUI instructor estimated that the deputy had a blood-alcohol content of 0.05 when he reported for duty at 8:00 a.m. That would still be below the legal limit in Florida but it was high enough to warrant an investigation into the deputy who said he was drinking the evening before work and hadn’t had any alcohol since midnight. He decided to leave the Sheriff’s office rather than go through an investigation according to the Bradenton Herald.
