New York is considering making it a felony to drive drunk with a child in the vehicle and adding new requirements to first time DUI offenders which may include interlock devices being installed after a first DUI conviction. According to the New York Times, the bill with the toughened laws could be on the governor’s desk any day. The only other state that makes DUI with a child in the car a felony is Arizona.
The bill comes on the heels of two highly publicized drunk driving crashes that killed children in New York. The first was the most widely known where a woman drove the wrong way on a highway and killed eight people including four young children. The second came in Manhattan when an 11-year-old girl was killed in a one car accident due to an alleged drunk driver.
