Ray LaHood, United States Transportation Secretary, is warning Americans there will be tough law enforcement for drunk driving this holiday season. In a story published by USA Today, LaHood is quoted as saying police will be targeting drunk drivers even the ones with “a little buzz” and they will be arrested. The government will spend $7 million on ads warning Americans that if they drink and drive, they will be arrested.
The announcement came during a news conference on impaired driving held jointly with Gil Kerlikowske, the White House drug czar. The USA Today story reports drunken driving rates fell about 7% in the U.S. since 2007. Part of the credit goes to national crackdowns staged during the holiday season. LaHood is suggesting cabs, buses, carpools or whatever people need to do to avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired.
