There was plenty of news recently concerning Orlando DUI charges including one major charge stemming from a fatal crash where the driver was driving under the influence of drugs. According to two separate articles published in the Orlando Sentinel there were a number of arrests for DUI last week including one in a high profile case from a Christmas Eve fatality.
The arrest of 36-year-old Christopher Thomas Price came nearly eight months after a fatal crash that police charge was due to DUI drugs. Price was arrested in Daytona Beach but the crash took place near Spruce View Way on Taylor Road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol Price was driving on the wrong side of the road around 11:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Price’s truck crossed the center line of the road and hit a van drive by a Port Orange couple. The crash caused the death of Brett David Gerken and his wife Renee Gerken. The FHP said that toxicology reports showed the presence of Oxycodone, Xanax and marijuana in Price’s system. He has been charged with DUI with property damage and two counts of felony DUI manslaughter. His bond was set at $100,000 and he was booked into the Volusia County Jail.
As mentioned previously, this was not the only DUI news coming out of Orlando. There was also the report of nine DUI arrests stemming from a checkpoint in Osceola County. According to the report in the Sentinel there were more than 1,522 cars stopped between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. There were 23 arrests nine of which were DUI charges. There were 273 citations written and 356 violations issued. The 14 arrests not related to DUI charges were mainly for outstanding warrants and drug charges.
